Growing DDOS Attacks on VOIP Providers a Major Concern

In 2021 , a communication service provider mostly based in the UK encountered DDOS attacks that caused portions of their services to go down. This has resulted in major concerns among the partners to resolve such a paramount issue.

What is a DDOS Attack?

A DDOS attack , also known as Distributed Denial of Service attack is a technique or you can say a malicious attempt to overpower the service provider or the target with flood or internet requests from different sources.

Here is a video explaining a typical DDOS Attack and how it’s engineered.

The Victims

The DDOS attacks in 2021 on the voice service providers include big names such as bandwidth.com , Voip.ms and more. The attack not only affected the voice services but also caused an outrage on emergency communication services. As most of these service providers also handle emergency services.

Due to the nature and the efficiency of these attacks most of the service providers so far are unable to find a solution to mitigate such attacks.

“There’s lots of instability at the moment because lots of partners and SIP providers are not able to defend against the attacks,” said Ian Rowan, Senior Channel Manager at Wildix UK

The Demand

The worst part of the equation came when the perpetrators of such attacks demanded ransom to cease the DDOS attacks of 100 Bitcoins which amounts to a staggering figure of $4.3 Million in 2021.

No one can guarantee that by giving in to such demands these providers will not be targeted again. There is a higher chance that if they comply with such demands , they will be targeted again.

Securing Oneself

With the DDOS attacks on the rise (233% in the 2021 alone) it’s important that the communication service provider (CSP) take the necessary measures to protect themselves against such impending attacks.

Hiring a renowned DDOS mitigation service may be one of the ways they could secure their services and customers.
